Low Water

Low Water

This is the old coprolite workings on Quy Fen. Last winter this lake was full to overflowing. Last Sunday it was so low that the depth gauge in the foreground is now entirely out of the water. We need some rain. A lot of it.

Touch Screen Phones

26/07/10

I've seen a couple of postings recently talking about whether touch screen really is better than a keyboard for a phone: this one on Nokia Conversations and this one on All About Symbian. It's confirmed my suspicions about my recent purchase of a Samsung i8910 HD.  read more ...

One Photographer Photographed ...

On our walk this afternoon while I was taking this photo of Beth with my Nokia 6760 phone Beth was taking a rather better one of me with her Nikon D60.

Although she did clever post processing with hers when we got home: the clouds were good, but they weren't that good.

A Fine Man

14/07/10

At a time when some people are applauding the actions of the appalling Raoul Moat I was struck by the words of PC David Rathband who was seriously injured by Moat when he was shot in the face and chest as he was sitting in his patrol car. Apparently he may lose the sight in both eyes. In a statement he said:  read more ...

Minifying

13/07/10

Today's Word of the Day is "minify" which is, to my surprise, a real word - in American English at least - not one made up by programmers. Wibbling

12/07/10

As I'm suffering another bloody migraine today1 and so not getting any useful work done I thought I'd wibble here as I'd not done so for a while. Apologies in advance for any typos. I'll re-read this later and fix.  read more ...

New Map Software

08/07/10

After a long struggle the first public release of our mapping application, rewritten to use the Ordnance Survey's OpenSpace server is now online at last. As before it lets you browse the country using Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 scale maps and both create routes to download for use on your GPS and upload tracks from your GPS to see where you've been.  read more ...

Hugo on the Tele

04/07/10

Some of the gang went to Bletchley Park for the first vintage computer festival a couple of weeks ago ago. It was covered by BBC Click and they spotted Hugo standing in front of an Acorn sounding like he knew what he was talking about so persuaded him to do a piece to camera and he came out with a great metaphor for how writing software used to be.  read more ...

The Swan Whisperer

The Swan Whisperer

Quite how Beth first managed to get the parent swan to come over and sit so very close to her while she took photos and then for the parent to be so unconcerned when the cygnets turned up too and got even closer I'm not sure, but it was quite a thing to watch.
