Migraines (or is it Memory?)
|
 |
Back to Addenbrooke's today to talk about the migraines I've been having since my stroke. I've mentioned this before but I used to get the light show but no headache, now I don't get the light show but I do get thumping headaches and the suspicion is that they're migraines.
The annoying aspect of this visit was that the referral was to Professor Hodges and the appointment came from the Memory Clinic, which he runs. When my appointment letter came there were questionnaires for Beth and I to fill in which were about my memory[1] and they wanted Beth to come too. We both suspected they had got their wires crossed and thought the referral was about memory. So I phoned up and spoke to Professor Hodges secretary who assured me that they want Beth to come. We were unconvinced but went along with it.
So today we turn up and the first thing that happens is we watch as the couple before us are split off, her for memory tests, him to be talked to about her memory problems. When they try this on us I point out that I'm not here to talk about memory, I'm here to talk about my migraines, as the referral letter clearly says, so why do I need my memory tested.
Anyway, after this somewhat shaky start we finally got to see one of Professor Hodges team. He agreed it sounded like migraine and said I should ideally use a drug in the triptan family to treat it however they are contra-indicated with strokes and he needed to check whether that applied to my sort but he would write to me and my GP.
[1] which isn't great now, especially the short term memory[2], but it's not what we're trying to fix
[2] ... and the short term memory ;-)
