Want a Free Domain Name?

Domain names cost money. Not a lot, unless you go for one of those new TLDs like .rent or .college, but still some. So I was surprised recently to discover there are a few TLDs where you can get domain names for free.

freenom offer free domain names in five different TLDs:

• .tk
• .ml
• .ga
• .cf
• .gq

From playing around with availability searches they appear to be free so long as:

1. The domain name your choose is four or more characters in length (three character names currently start at £326.09, two character at £652.17 and one at £1,652.17).
2. The domain name is not a dictionary word. For example milton.tk would cost me £8.22 per annum, milton.ml £86.09, and milton.gq £173.91.

I'm not sure I'd trust these free domains for anything valuable but if you want a unique domain name for something ephemeral then this would be just the job (writes the proud owner of xlon.ga - my own personal domain name shortener - you pronounce it "ex-longer").
