The Perils of Blogging 2

»

I've already written about one of the perils of blogging and I'm a little wary of coming back to the subject as it does seem a little like looking up one's own arse but trying to write a blog every day this year has made me think more about the whole blogging meme1 and its consequences.

Today's cautionary tale I need to talk about a little carefully as it involves a couple who are going through some "interesting" times at the moment, which I do hope will work out for them in the end. For this reason I'll be vague on the whys and wherefores but that shouldn't matter as that's not my reason for mentioning them.

What's happened is that one partner has been blogging about what has been happening in her life. She did so using one of the public blog sites so her site has been readable by anyone in the world for quite some time. All was fine. Her friends read the blog and offered her their support. All was right with the world.

But then her partner who was, shall we say, not entirely happy with the events on which the blog reflected posted the address of the blog to a forum and suddenly our blogger found she had a lot more visitors, people she didn't know, and some were people who it appeared from her last posting to her blog weren't so sympathetic to her story.

She's now changed the blog's settings so it's only accessible by invitation.

It's a curious business though. When she blogged and left the blog wide open she presumably didn't think she minded anyone reading it. It turns out that she did and, I rather suspect, she now feels hurt by the experience. Which is sad.

Anyway I offer this up as a cautionary tale to fellow bloggers.

  1. Did you like the way I slipped "meme" in there, two buzzwords for the price of one!
