N800 Reprised

»

You may remember that back in June I bought myself a Nokia N800 to replace my trusty Nokia 770. At the time I'd intended to do lots with it but what with one thing and another it's not been used that much - mainly because I've not been away that much since then, especially sailing.

Nokia N800 I had planned to install two 16GB cards so I could put all our MP3s on the N800 and play them via that but it didn't happen until last week when the first card turned up, inspired by an article in this month's Linux Journal reminding me how good the N800 could be.

Having established that it works with the N800 I'm now waiting until Monday and the VAT drop before I order a second one.

I've also been playing around with some new software. I briefly install LXDoom - yes, really, it's Doom on an N800. A classic game and it's faithfully reproduced but the user interface really isn't ideal, especially if you're left handed.

What was more interesting was gPodder - a podcast client. Essentially it lets you subscribe to podcasts and, when you've got an Internet connection, you can download the latest broadcasts from each of them onto your flash card. Then later while offline you can still play them back. This is all old news if you're used to podcasting but I confess it's the first time I've taken any real interest in it.

Other things I discovered about the N800. First the latest OS2008 software now does automatic updates of installed software1 which is very nice. And despite it supporting Flash video in theory BBC iPlayer video doesn't work at all well sadly.

  1. A bit like KDE's adept-notifier or an automated apt-get upgrade if you prefer to get your hands dirty.
