Sony E 55-210mm
f/4.5-6.3 OSS Zoom

This is the lens Sony intend to complement the 16-50mm and it's not bad but the auto-focus is frustratingly slow and has a tendency to hunt. On one occasion I had it give up completely.

You can use manual focus or what they call DMF mode where you auto-focus first and then fine tune the focus (it digitally zooms in while you do this) by hand but I find "fly by wire" manual focus lacks feel and is hard to get right.

Within its limitations it works well, as the photo above and others in the album demonstrate, but it did pretty badly when we saw the two Lancasters where the hunting meant that I got poor focus on the planes. Even in this photo, which is the best of the lot, the focus is not very sharp.

So after I bought the 70-210mm I sold it (for rather more than I paid for the 70-210mm) as the main use I had for a telephoto zoom was aircraft and birds and good focus mattered.

Wiblog:
The Whisky Advent Calendar
