The Earth Moved

»

The earth moved for me in bed last night but not for Beth. If you're in the UK this news will come as no surprise as we had our own little earthquake at 1am up at Market Rasen which is about 80 miles from here. Apparently it measured 5.3 on the Richter scale1.

It woke me up and I confess I didn't realise it was an earthquake, in fact in my groggy state I thought it was her just shaking the bed for some reason!

But the fact that Beth slept through it is actually good news from my point of view as 25 years ago she was on a train close to the epicentre of the last big one in North Wales in 1984, a story which she has recounted a few times over the years. Now we're even.

  1. Personally I think the Mercalli scale is more useful as it measures effect not energy, on that scale it was a "strong" in Market Rasen but felt like a "slight" to "moderate" around Cambridge from reports I'm reading this morning on the cam.misc news group.
