The Hug run a list server1 which hosts various lists both locally and nationally because it's the sort of thing we do for ourselves, our friends, our community and for organisations we support and, if you're reading this post, you may well be a subscriber to one or more of them2.

We also do a lot of other pro bono Internet related work for local and national charities, for not-for-profits and for our village (where we host, and in some cases manage, the web sites for the parish council, the photographic club, the scouts, the village magazine, the produce show, the country park and the village web site itself as well as editing Milton News), and we also provide a free GPX mapping service for walkers.

But if you find the list server useful or want to help fund our pro bono work and you are buying your Christmas presents (or indeed anything else) from Amazon then you can help ensure that we have sufficient resources to continue to host the server by buying them via this hyperlink and we then get some commission on every purchase you make this way and it costs you nothing extra.

In addition if you're thinking about booking accommodation at any stage then if you book from a wide selection of hotels, guest houses, B&Bs, through LateRooms or self catering cottages through Sykes Cottages then we also get commission again at no extra cost to you.

Similarly if you are buying walking gear either for yourself or as Christmas presents then our project WalkLakes relies on income from people purchasing via our advertisers so that's another way you can help us at The Hug. See this page for more details of that and a list of advertisers.

Thank you for your support.

  1. What you're seeing on that page are the public lists, we also host various private ones, one of which is the second busiest on the server and another is the fourth (see also footnote 2).
  2. If you want to see some posting stats take a look here (although it's a bit short of data at the moment as the clock was reset on 5th October).
