Early Birthday

»

It's my birthday next week and I often buy myself a present ... because I'm worth it ... no actually because I'm happy to spend more on me than anyone else.

Nokia N800 This year I've bought myself a Nokia N800 which is essentially an upgrade of my old Nokia 770 which I used to blog my recent sailing trip. It arrived yesterday.

The N800 runs twice as fast as the 770 and has two memory slots, each of which can take up to 16GB of flash. This in turn may solve another problem I've got: my iAudio MP3 player is now very full. It's 20GB and I need more space, so if I get two 16GB cards I could put all our MP3s on the N800 and play them via that.

Other improvements over the 770 include a USB socket which you can put into "master" mode, which means I could take other cameras on holiday and download pictures, rather than relying on Bluetooth and my phone's camera.

"Why not an N810?" you may asking. Well for a start it's a lot dearer. It has three enhancements over the N800:

  1. A built in keyboard - but the N800 works with my Stowaway keyboard just like the 770 before it, and that's a lot bigger and easier to use.
  2. A built in GPS - but I've got a Navman B10 GPS which the N800 pairs with via Bluetooth quite happily.
  3. A smarter screen which is easier to read in daylight - now that is something I would like.

However the biggest drawback, other than the price delta, is that it has only one flash memory slot, so the maximum memory is 16GB which therefore won't solve my MP3 problem, and it doesn't have an FM radio either, which the N800 does.

Anyway I'm still playing with it. No doubt I shall wibble about it again later.
